Pahela Boishakh
The first day of Bangla year is called Pahela Boishakh. This much expected day comes once a year. According to our culture
and tradition, we have been celebrating this day for centuries. Moreover, we
celebrate the Bangla year formally. We welcome the day by singing “Esho he
Boishakh, esho esho . The day is celebrated all over the country. People wear
traditional clothes on this day. Women usually wear red and white colored Sari.
Men wear Panjabi- pajama or lungi. And people eat traditional food water-rice and
Hilsa fish fry. People enjoy different kinds of cultural functions like- doll
dance, cock fight, horse race etc. On this day, rural people prepare special
foods. Children buy balloons, bamboo flute etc. Actually everyone enjoys the
day. Shopkeepers and traders open ‘Halkhata’. It means they offer sweets to
their customers and clients, pay off the debt of the previous year and start
everything new. Various TV channels air special cultural programs on this day.
The day’s first program begins at ‘Ramna Batamul’ in the morning. People go
there with masks, banners, festoons etc. and enjoy the cultural events. Across
the country, “Boishakhi Melas” or fairs are organized, where people
come together to purchase unique items and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere. Numerous
cultural organizations arrange dance performances, folk songs, and other
artistic presentations, providing an opportunity for people to connect with
their rich heritage. Through these celebrations, the people of Bangladesh come
together to embrace their cultural roots, leaving behind the past and embracing
the promise of a fresh start. Pohela Boishakh is truly a day of enjoyment and a
tribute to the cherished cultural identity of the Bengali community.
